“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things He planned for us…” Ephesians 2:10
The Fine Arts program at Northside Christian Academy enables students to discover and develop their God-given talents. The motto for our Fine Arts Department is Soli Deo Gloria – To God alone be the glory. At Northside Christian Academy, the Fine Arts Department has its mission to prepare student to use their gifts and talents for God’s glory. Because each student is uniquely gifted by God in areas of creativity, we desire to challenge and equip them to be their best for Him.
Our Fine Arts program includes drama, visual art, choir, vocal ensemble, praise team, guitar ensemble, and band. Private lessons in voice, strings, piano, and band instruments are available to all students.
News and Views from the World of the Arts
At Northside Christian Academy we think training in the areas of the arts is valuable to fulfill our mission of providing Christ-centered, biblically based education in pursuit of excellence. As we pursue this goal and you as parents invest in your students’ education, be encouraged that the time spent in music, band, visual arts, and speech and drama training are accomplishing more than the obvious. Some recent research -
- In 2010, students who took four years of arts classes while in high school scored 102 points better on their SATs than students who took only one-half year or less. Source: Americans for the Arts/The College Board, 2010.
- A study of Nobel Prize winners in science revealed that most have arts related hobbies. Source: “Hobbled Arts Limit Our Future,” Psychology Today/Imagine That! blog,2009.
Private Lessons
Private Lessons – The Fine Arts department of Northside Christian Academy offers students the opportunity to study privately with a teacher in the areas of piano, voice, band instruments, strings, and art. Many of these lessons may be arranged during the school day when the student may miss a non-academic time of the day. All teachers are experienced and trained in their area. Students are given the opportunities to sing and perform or display their work in an individualized setting such as recitals, church services, community venues, or art showings. Taking advantage of the private lesson program has allowed many students to grow to a new level in their artistic abilities and achieve great things, for the glory of God.
Theater
Theater - Students at Northside Christian Academy have the opportunity to be involved in various drama events during the course of the school year. Plays and musical theater are a part of the school year, and many students take advantage of this outlet to learn poise and self-confidence in performing before an audience. Participation in theater can be demanding, but one our students’ most rewarding activities. Often, memories (and friendships) are made for a lifetime. In recent years NCA students have performed The Hiding Place, Oklahoma, The King and I, and Oliver Twist. We believe that the skill of communication is a gift from God, and learning to demonstrate good skills in this area ultimately glorifies the God of Creation.

Choir
Choral - Students in grades 6-12 may participate in the choral program with choirs at the middle school and the high school level and an audition ensemble for students in grades 10-12. In this choral setting students will learn the fundamental skills for singing in a choral setting. With this purpose in mind, they will be guided in instruction in the physiology of the voice, the skill of sight-reading printed music and the discipline of following a director. Northside’s choral groups have performed in many settings including the Biltmore Estate, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, the Southern Christmas Show, and various community venues. We believe that God has given us music as a means of worshiping and praising Him; therefore, choral music in the Christian school should challenge students to higher levels of accomplishments as this gift of music is offered back to God, in a sacrifice of praise.

Band
Band - Beginning in grade 5 and continuing through the final years of high school Northside students have the opportunity to be a part of a band program that offers an excellent foundation in instrumental music. Students may develop the ability to play an instrument, read musical notation, understand the cultural relevance of musical education, and have opportunities to perform in public settings in order to refine their musical skills. NCA Band students have performed at various venues in the community as well as at Disney World, Carowinds, and the Southern Christmas show. We believe that God has given us music as a means of worshiping and praising Him, therefore instrumental music in the Christian school should challenge students to higher levels of accomplishments as this gift of music is offered back to God, as a sacrifice of praise.
