Bible

Text: Bible Truths

As a Christian school, not only is Bible a separate class, but our teachers integrate Biblical truths in every subject. In second grade, students are introduced to Bible truths that will enable them to understand God’s Word and be motivated toward obedience from the heart.

History

Text: Our America

In this course, second graders will step back into history and learn what life would have been like in our country’s early days. The students learn the history of our flag and of patriotic songs and holidays and study the lives of groups that made valuable contributions to our American heritage: the Pilgrims, American Indians, early colonists, pioneers, cowboys, and immigrants.

Math

Text: SRA Real Math

Math concepts taught in second grade include counting, place value, addition and subtraction, money, time, graphs, simple geometry, multiplication and division, and Roman numerals. Story problems are used to provide practice in using the skills and facts learned and are based on concrete situations. New material is built on prior learning and encourages students to think through new concepts.

Language

Text: English 2

Concepts learned in first grade are reinforced in second grade as students go on to master the following areas: recognizing and correctly punctuating sentences; working with compound words, rhyming words, antonyms, synonyms, contractions, and singular possessive words; forming plural; and using words correctly.

Phonics

Students are taught reading skills that instill a life-long enthusiasm for reading. The comprehension questions tests the student’s literal, interpretive, and critical understanding. The vocabulary and phonics incorporation help ensure maximum language growth.

Reading

Students develop skill in identifying characters, learn to follow the unfolding of a plot and to recognize a climax and the events leading to it. Comprehension and vocabulary development are stressed.

Science

Text: Purposeful Design Science

In this course, students learn to enjoy God’s world as they study His plan for creation. The student’s knowledge of scientific concepts is increased as he/she learns about the human body, animals, plants, matter, energy, and conservation.
